British Sign Language (BSL) Level 1 – Oxford

Our Level 1 British Sign Language course in Oxford is designed for complete beginners. Whether you’re learning for work, family, personal interest, or simply curiosity, this course offers a clear and practical introduction to BSL in a welcoming, inclusive environment.

You do not need any prior experience to join — just an open mind and a willingness to have a go.
 

Who is this course for?

This course is suitable if you:

• have never signed before

• feel nervous about learning a new language

• are returning to study after a break

• want to learn BSL for work, study, or personal reasons

• want to understand Deaf culture alongside the language

Many students start the course feeling unsure and finish feeling more confident in their ability to communicate.

What you will learn

Over 14 weeks, you will build a strong foundation in everyday British Sign Language, including:

• fingerspelling and numbers

• meeting people and introductions

• family and personal information

• food and drink

• daily routines

• travel and directions

• basic grammar and sentence structure

• using facial expression and body language appropriately

 

The course focuses on real communication and building a useful vocabulary. You will practise signing with others from the very first sessions.

 

How the course works

• Weekly, in-person classes at The Old Fire Station, Oxford

• One hour per week

• Taught by fully qualified, experienced tutors

• Interactive and practical sessions

 

Learning support and materials

As part of the course, you will receive:

• a 60-page printed workbook to support your learning and note-taking

• weekly home learning tasks to help reinforce what you learn in class

• access to an online video package to support revision and practice at home
   

These resources are designed to help you build confidence between sessions and support different learning styles.

Exams and progression

This course aligns with the Signature Level 1 British Sign Language qualification. If you would like to take the Level 1 exam, this can be discussed with us towards the end of the course.

The course also provides a strong foundation for progression to Level 2 British Sign Language.

A note for nervous learners

It is completely normal to feel unsure before starting, especially if you have not studied for a while or feel anxious in group settings. We are very experienced in supporting beginners and aim to create a calm, encouraging learning environment.
