Advanced Study & Professional Progression
Level 3 represents a significant progression from Level 2 and is designed for learners ready to study BSL at an advanced level.
This course develops fluency, independence and precision in communication. It is academically structured and requires consistent independent study alongside weekly sessions.
All learners on this course are registered for formal Signature assessment. Unlike Levels 1 and 2, assessment is an integral part of Level 3 and forms part of the course structure.
Course Structure
Level 3 runs weekly for 2 hours across 30 weeks.
Independent learning is essential at this level and should be expected alongside taught sessions.
Throughout the course, you will develop advanced expressive and receptive skills, prepare a formal presentation, take part in structured conversations, and complete independent research tasks linked to Deaf life and culture.
Signature Topic Areas
Level 3 follows the Signature specification and covers six core topic areas, explored in depth and with analytical discussion.
Home Life
Explore the unique experiences and challenges Deaf individuals may encounter in everyday home settings. Discuss access to communication within families, the use of technology, and the impact of communication barriers in domestic environments.
Social and Recreational Activities
Examine the social dynamics of being Deaf in wider society. Consider accessibility in recreational activities, community events and social gatherings, and discuss how inclusion can be improved.
Health and Wellbeing
Gain insight into specific health and wellbeing issues affecting the Deaf community. Develop the language needed to discuss medical appointments, healthcare access, advocacy and communication barriers within health services.
Education and Training
Understand the educational barriers Deaf students may face in both mainstream and specialist environments. Explore how Deaf education has evolved historically and how access to language impacts attainment.
Employment
Discuss workplace accessibility, professional communication, equality legislation and the practical challenges Deaf individuals may encounter in employment settings.
Consumer Issues
Explore access to services, public information and customer experiences. Develop language to discuss rights, advocacy and everyday access challenges.
Deaf History and Culture
Alongside topic work, learners engage with Deaf history and culture throughout the course. This includes exploring historical milestones, language rights, identity, community development and the lived experiences of Deaf individuals. Understanding this context is essential to developing meaningful and respectful communication.

Learners should expect regular independent study each week. This includes:
-
Preparing presentations and structured conversations
-
