BSL Level 1 — Beginner

A confident, practical introduction to British Sign Language
BSL Level 1 is designed for complete beginners and those with little or no previous experience of British Sign Language (BSL). Whether you are learning for personal interest, family reasons, professional development or simply to communicate more confidently with Deaf people, this course builds real-world signing skills from the ground up.

What you’ll learn
Throughout the 14-week course, you’ll develop practical vocabulary and conversational skills across everyday topics, including:

• Numbers, time and daily routines
• Food, drink and social situations
• Directions and local information
Classes are interactive, supportive and focused on real communication.
Each learner receives a detailed 60+ page digital workbook to support their progress. The workbook includes structured notes, guided practice activities and weekly homework tasks to reinforce learning between sessions.
Supporting video resources are also provided so you can review signs and practise confidently at home.
Qualification (Optional Exam Route)
Level 1 can be taken as a leisure course or as a pathway to the Signature Level 1 Award in British Sign Language.
If you choose the qualification route, you will receive:

BSL Level 2 — Intermediate
Signature-accredited BSL course for expanding your skills
BSL Level 2 builds on the foundations of Level 1 and supports learners to communicate more independently and accurately in British Sign Language (BSL). The focus shifts from vocabulary building to developing fluid conversation, understanding context and responding naturally in real-life situations.
Who it’s for
• Learners who have completed BSL Level 1 or have equivalent experience
• Professionals who use BSL in education, healthcare or public-facing roles
• Those wanting to deepen their confidence and conversational ability
• Leisure learners who enjoy signing and want to progress further
What you’ll learn
Over 18 weeks, you’ll expand your vocabulary and develop greater confidence discussing a wider range of topics, including:
• Work and education
• Health and wellbeing
• Travel and leisure
• Current experiences and opinions
• Structured conversation and short presentations
Classes include guided conversation practice, peer interaction and opportunities to refine receptive and expressive skills.

Our Level 3 BSL course is designed for confident signers who want to develop advanced language skills and a deeper understanding of Deaf life, culture and society. This immersive, fully signed, in-person course builds fluency, accuracy and confidence for professional or further study pathways.
