BSL Level 2 in Oxford City Centre

Our British Sign Language (BSL) Level 2 course in Oxford City Centre builds on the foundations of Level 1 and focuses on developing fluency, confidence and expressive skill in real communication.

This 18-week course moves you beyond basic exchanges and into more sustained, natural interaction. While the course runs over a defined period, learners benefit from structured supplementary materials and ongoing support that deepen progress beyond classroom time.

Classes are taught by a deaf tutor in a small group setting, creating regular opportunities to practise extended conversations and receive personalised feedback in real time.
 

What You’ll Develop at Level 2

At this stage, you will:

• Expand vocabulary across everyday topics such as travel, shopping and spending, education, and working life
• Practise sustained partner conversations
• Develop confidence responding naturally in real-time signing
• Improve clarity, rhythm and grammatical accuracy
• Strengthen receptive skills through structured practice
 

While Level 1 gives you the foundations, Level 2 is where you begin to use British Sign Language more fluidly and independently.
 

Course Structure

Our Oxford City Centre Level 2 course runs for 18 weeks, with weekly 1.5-hour sessions.

Each learner receives a comprehensive 60+ page digital workbook designed to support structured progression. The workbook includes guided exercises, conversation prompts and homework tasks to consolidate learning between sessions.
 

Throughout the course, you will:

• Prepare and deliver a short presentation (to peers; sharing with the wider class and tutor is optional)
• Prepare a structured conversation
• Take part in mock Signature-style receptive practice so you understand what formal assessments involve
• Complete weekly homework tasks
• Practise extended conversation in class with structured tutor feedback
 

Learners also have access to supporting video resources that reinforce exam skills, grammar development and aspects of Deaf culture. These materials allow you to review and deepen your understanding outside class time.
 

Leisure Route or Qualification Pathway

Level 2 can be taken as a leisure course or as preparation for the Signature Level 2 Award in British Sign Language.
 

Some learners study purely for enjoyment and communication confidence. Others choose to progress towards formal assessment.
 

For those selecting the exam route, additional structured support is provided, including:

• An exam study pack with targeted video materials to further develop signing skills
• An exam workbook focused on assessment topics and preparation
• One-to-one feedback on video recordings of your own signing
• Presentation and receptive practice aligned to Signature criteria
 

Exams are priced separately from the course.
 

Even if you choose not to take the formal exam, the course follows Signature guidance and covers assessment content. This ensures you are working to a nationally recognised standard throughout and gives you insight into what the exam process involves before committing.
 

Homework & Independent Learning

Weekly homework typically takes between 15 minutes and one hour.

Tasks may include vocabulary consolidation, conversation preparation, and exposure to Deaf culture through documentaries, interviews and television programmes exploring Deaf life, history and rights.

This cultural awareness is an important part of developing meaningful communication skills.
 

Feedback & Conversation Practice

Level 2 is highly interactive, with much of the learning taking place through partner work and guided activities.

Small group teaching allows for regular conversation practice, with tutors offering ongoing corrections and refinements to support accuracy and fluency.

Consistency and active participation are key to making real progress at this stage.
 

Time Commitment

Alongside weekly sessions, we recommend allowing approximately 30–60 minutes per week for independent practice. Consistency supports fluency and long-term retention.
 

Why Level 2 Matters

Level 2 is where BSL starts to feel less like isolated signs and more like real communication.

If Level 1 gives you the tools,
Level 2 helps you use them.
 

It is an ideal next step for learners who want to:

• Communicate more confidently in social or workplace settings
• Strengthen fluency before progressing further
• Prepare for the advanced demands of Level 3
