If you've been thinking about learning British Sign Language, our Level 1 course in Abingdon is the perfect place to start. Designed for complete beginners, the course provides a practical introduction to everyday BSL through interactive lessons taught by experienced tutors.

Is this course right for you?

Our Level 1 course is suitable for anyone starting their BSL journey. Many of our students have never learned a language before, while others join to support their career, communicate with Deaf friends or family, or simply enjoy learning something new.
 

If you're returning to education after a break or feel a little nervous about joining a class, you'll be in good company. We pride ourselves on creating a friendly, encouraging atmosphere where everyone can learn at their own pace.
 

What the course covers

During the course you'll build a solid foundation in everyday British Sign Language, including:
 

  • Fingerspelling and numbers

  • Greetings and introductions

  • Family and personal information

  • Food and drink

  • Daily routines

  • Travel and directions

  • Basic BSL grammar and sentence structure

  • Facial expressions and non-manual features used in BSL
     

From the very first lesson, there are plenty of opportunities to practise signing in pairs and small groups, helping you develop confidence through real communication.
 

How the course works

Classes take place once a week in Abingdon and are taught by experienced, qualified tutors. Sessions are practical, interactive and designed to give everyone plenty of opportunities to take part, practise and ask questions as they progress through the course.
 

What's included?

Your course includes a professionally produced 60-page workbook, weekly home learning activities and access to our online video library, giving you everything you need to practise and build confidence between classes.
 

Exams and progression

The course follows the Signature Level 1 British Sign Language qualification and covers the three required units: Introduction to British Sign Language, Conversational British Sign Language and Communication in British Sign Language.
 

If you'd like to gain the nationally recognised qualification, assessments can be arranged towards the end of the course. Assessment fees are charged separately from the course fee.
 

Many students continue their learning by progressing to our Level 2 British Sign Language course.
