Advanced Study & Professional Progression
BSL Level 3 represents a significant progression from Level 2 and is designed for learners ready to study British Sign Language at an advanced level.
This academically structured course develops fluency, independence and precision in communication. Consistent independent study is expected alongside weekly sessions.
All learners are registered for formal Signature assessment. Unlike Levels 1 and 2, assessment is an integral part of Level 3 and forms part of the course structure.
Course Structure
Level 3 runs weekly for 2 hours across 30 weeks in Oxford.
Independent learning is essential at this level and should be expected alongside taught sessions.
Throughout the course, you will:
• Develop advanced expressive and receptive skills
• Prepare and deliver a formal presentation
• Take part in structured conversations
• Complete independent research tasks linked to Deaf life and culture
From an early stage, learners are actively encouraged to practise conversational and presentation skills in class. As soon as you are able to engage at the required level, you will be signing, discussing and presenting with your peers in a structured, supportive environment. Regular in-class practice ensures that fluency develops through real interaction — not just independent study.
Dedicated time is also given to understanding BSL grammar and language structure. We embed it throughout the course and revisit key features regularly. This ensures that expressive accuracy develops alongside fluency, supporting clear, professional-level communication.
Learners are given access to a dedicated Google Classroom, which is updated weekly with modular PowerPoint slides, video resources and an extensive list of recommended receptive materials. This supports independent study and allows you to consolidate and extend your learning between sessions.
You will also be given several opportunities throughout the year to submit video homework, receiving personalised one-to-one feedback on your signing and exam readiness. This targeted feedback helps refine accuracy, fluency and confidence ahead of formal Signature assessment.
