Level 2 Progression & Readiness Assessment
Whether you’ve recently completed Level 2, have developed your BSL through work or the Deaf community, or are thinking about progressing further, our Level 2 Progression & Readiness Assessment gives you the opportunity to have your BSL skills assessed individually and receive clear, constructive feedback on where you are now.
You might have completed Level 2 with Sign Together, studied with another BSL provider, be a Deaf signer or CODA, or have developed your BSL through working with or being closely connected to the Deaf community.
You may want an assessment at the end of your Level 2 learning simply for your own development, as evidence of your current skills or as part of your ongoing CPD. Alternatively, you may be considering Level 3 and want to establish whether you have the skills needed to progress.
This is not a replacement qualification — it is an individual skills and progression assessment.
We assess the core BSL skills expected at Level 2 using our own assessment tasks and criteria. The assessment is designed and marked by Sign Together UK and provides a rounded picture of your current BSL skills, together with guidance on your next steps.
The assessment includes:
BSL Communication & Presentation
You will give a prepared presentation in BSL. This allows us to assess your ability to communicate information clearly and fluently, using appropriate vocabulary, BSL structure and non-manual features.
Interactive BSL Conversation
You will take part in a two-way conversation with a fluent BSL signer. We will assess your ability to understand and respond, ask and answer questions, maintain an interaction and communicate naturally and confidently in BSL.
BSL Understanding & Response
You will watch a video of a fluent BSL signer and respond to questions about what you have understood. This assesses your ability to receive BSL accurately and demonstrate your understanding.
Together, these components give us a rounded picture of your ability to present information in BSL, communicate interactively and receive and understand BSL from another signer.
Our Level 2 Skills & Progression Framework
We look at a range of skills throughout the assessment, including:
- BSL fluency and clarity
- BSL grammar and structure
- Range and accuracy of vocabulary
- Use of non-manual features
- Interaction and turn-taking
- Comprehension
- Ability to respond and clarify
- Ability to communicate extended information
- Confidence and independence
Following your assessment, you will receive individual feedback outlining the skills you have demonstrated, areas of strength and anything we recommend developing further.
If you are considering Level 3, we will also confirm whether we believe you are ready to progress.
Ready for Level 3
You have demonstrated the BSL skills required to progress to our Level 3 programme.
Ready with targeted development
You are close to the required standard, but there are specific areas we recommend developing before or alongside starting Level 3.
Further development recommended
There are areas of your Level 2 BSL that we recommend strengthening before progressing to Level 3.
You do not need to be planning to take Level 3 to benefit from the assessment. For many learners, it is simply an opportunity to have their BSL assessed one-to-one, recognise how far they have progressed and identify useful areas for continued development
.What's included in the £99 fee?
- Your full Level 2 Progression & Readiness Assessment
- Individual feedback on your BSL skills
- Identification of strengths and areas for development
- Guidance on your next steps
- Access to our assessment and exam preparation resources, including videos and guidance
- Level 3 readiness guidance, if relevant to you
- A Sign Together UK certificate of completion, on request, if you successfully complete the assessment.
If you need to retake an element
If there is an element of the assessment that you would like to develop and retake, you will only pay for that individual element rather than paying the full £99 assessment fee again.
The cost of a retake covers the assessor’s time to reassess that element, together with any additional support you may need to help you prepare.
This means you can focus on the specific area that needs further development without having to repeat the entire assessment.
Please note
This is an internal Sign Together UK assessment. It is not an accredited qualification and does not constitute a Signature qualification or certificate.
What if I need a formal Signature qualification?
If you need an accredited Level 2 qualification for employment, professional or other formal purposes, you can choose to take the Signature Level 2 qualification with us. This follows the formal Signature assessment process and results in an official Signature certificate.
If you do not require a formal qualification but would value an individual assessment of your current BSL skills, feedback on your development or confirmation that you are ready to progress further, our Level 2 Progression & Readiness Assessment provides an alternative route.
Progression & Readiness Assessment: £99
Your Level 2 Progression & Readiness Workbook is included with your assessment and is available to download as soon as you book. It explains each part of the assessment, what we’ll be looking for, how to choose and prepare your presentation topic, and includes practical planning activities, skills checklists, preparation videos and tips for the presentation, conversation and receptive elements. Use it to start preparing at your own pace before your assessment.
